That would be David Archuleta. The doe-eyed teen faced off against David Cook for the "Idol" title Tuesday night, and in Cowell's opinion, out-performed the 25-year-old rocker. Each David performed three songs in the final performance show, which rolled out announcer Michael Buffer ("Let's get ready to rumble!") to introduce the finalists in boxing robes and gloves.

The twister that made Tupelo famousA twister brought national attention to Tupelo, Miss., long before its favorite son, Elvis Aron Presley, wiggled his way to fame on the Ed Sullivan Show. In fact, Elvis, born on Jan. 8, 1935, was just barely a toddler when an F-5 tornado roared through his hometown 70 years ago today, claiming the lives of 233 people. It was one of the deadliest tornadoes in U.S. history.
The newspaper that serves Tupelo, the Northeast Mississippi Daily Journal, has a nice four-part series about the tornado. The retrospective features interviews with survivors and stories of those who didn't make it through the storm. Weatherwise magazine also did a nice feature article on the 1936 Tupelo tornado. Not only did the storm rip through the town of Tupelo, but its 15 mile path affected rural communities as well. The morning after the storms rolled through Tupelo, other tornadoes developed near Gainesville, Ga., claiming the lives of an additional 203 people.

Princess Diana's Klondike Ensemble is a Pink/Peach Silk Period Dress and Hat in the style of 1880 worn by her during a Royal Tour to Canada in 1983. The dress is a form-fitting princess line gown of wild silk, with swagged overskirt ruched at sides and back to reveal a silk lace flounced underskirt and back train; the lace is repeated at the collar, bodice jabot and cuffs. The dress also contains interior bodice boning. The hat consists of cream petal straw trimmed with period velours au sabre silk ribbon, silk flowers and pearl sprigs. Both the dress and hat are currently in excellent condition. Princess Diana wore the dress and hat June 1983, in Edmonton, Alberta, Canada, at a Klondike period gala event. The event was part of the Prince and Princess's Canadian Royal Tour of that year. In need of an appropriate gown for the occasion, she chose this one from a selection of period pieces brought to her at Kensington Palace by Oscar-winning costume designer John Bright, at whose studio, Cosprop, the dress was made. This dress, which Diana mischievously chose, was first worn by Francesca Annis in the 1978 mini-series "Lillie Langtry" (Lillie Langtry, along with Prince Charles's mistress Camilla Parker Bowles's great-grandmother, Alice Keppel, had both been mistresses of Charles's great-great grandfather Edward VII when he was Prince of Wales in the late 1800's). Linda Mattock [60] had designed this dress as a "Langtry" dress, exemplifying the essence of Lillie's style. Diana then had the Klondike dress personally fitted on her by Mr. Bright and he altered it to her measurements. Mr. Bright also designed the hat specifically for Diana to wear with the dress. After Princess Diana wore the dress and hat, John Bright stored them until they were sold in association with Bonham's of London to Dr. Michael H. Smith for the benefit of MediCinema (a charitable organization that enhances the care of hospital patients by providing free film screenings to them and their families) [53]. The dress is currently on loan to the University of Alberta's Clothing and Textiles Collection. On Monday 2006-02-06, the Daily Express carried the article copied below entitled ‘Diana Death: Spies flashed laser beam at crash driver’. The article makes a good plot. It is an excellent fusion of truths and half truths – it is plausible – it could have happened that way and indeed there currently stands sufficient quasi evidence and motive to prompt a conviction.

Quite simply – I believe it was an ‘accident’ (i.e. not planned nor pre-mediated by the British establishment or the Royal family). I understand there has been a cover up on certain matters such as Diana’s pregnancy but such cover is routinely applied in sensitive situations. I am informed that neither Prince Charles nor his sons were aware of Princess Diana’s condition – it seemed both privately and publicly prudent that such news was kept hidden.

Princess Diana was killed in a Mercedes car crash in Paris, France on August 31, 1997. The Princess was killed along with Dodi Al Fayed son of the wealthy Egyptian Harrod's owner, Mohammed Al Fayed and the driver Henri Paul. A bodyguard of Diana's named Trevor Rees-Jones survived the crash. Diana lived for about 2 hours after the crash and was treated both at the scene and in a Paris Hospital. The driver was allegedly speeding and under the influence of drugs and alcohol. There has been speculation that the car was speeding to avoid celebrity photographers (called paparazzi) who regularly followed the couple. There are also numerous conspiracy theories that she was murdered and investigations are still ongoing almost 10 years after the incident see the 20 questions raised at the inquest below. For unknown reasons, the car hit a pole in a tunnel at high speed, under Place de l'Alma in the center of Paris. Photos of the damage to car caused accident are reproduced here. She had roles in several box-office flops until 1999, when she co-starred in "The Bone Collector" with Denzel Washington and won an Oscar for "Girl, Interrupted". A stern-looking martial arts wizard who studied and later taught his craft in Japan, Seagal (pronounced say-GAL) got his feet wet in motion pictures as a fight coordinator on John Frankenheimer's "The Challenge" (1982) and later set up a popular martial arts school in West Hollywood. He caught the attention of Michael Ovitz (then head of Creative Artists Agency) who arranged a martial arts demonstration for Warner Brothers president Terry Semel. Impressed by Seagal, Ovitz arranged a screen test and he was somewhat unexpectedly catapulted to action stardom. His first feature was the low-budget, urban cop drama "Above the Law" (1988), for which he provided the story, served as producer and played a CIA operative in Vietnam who later exposes the corruption of Chicago government officials.

Seagal cemented his popularity as an avenging action hero with the follow-up action/Aikido films "Marked for Death", "Hard to Kill" (both 1990) and "Out For Justice" (1991), in which his larger-than-life presence alternates between meditative serenity and vigilante violence. His persona represented an odd mix of the mainstreaming of Chinese and trendy New Age philosophizing with the contemporary taste for good guys who seemed sinister and yet satisfied an increasing taste for simplified notions of instant justice in a troubled USA, justified heroes who enjoy dispatching their enemies in as dispassionate a manner as possible.

The canny, pony-tailed actor has enhanced his mystique by creating a public image shrouded in mystery and surrounded by speculation about his possible past links with the CIA. Although critics have carped at Seagal's modest acting abilities, Janet Maslin of THE NEW YORK TIMES has summed up as the aspects of his star persona: "What Mr. Seagal offers is a clever, uncategorizable hybrid of physical prowess, fortune-cookie wisdom, law-and-order politics, street-smart bravado and, above all, the confident insouciant manner of a natural-born star." Segal earned mainstream status with "Under Siege" (1992), a "Die Hard"-style thriller that grossed over $80 million. Its villains were played with relish by Tommy Lee Jones and Gary Busey and it possessed welcome moments of deadpan humor. Seagal followed up this success with his directorial debut, "On Deadly Ground" (1994), a well-intentioned eco-thriller featuring Seagal as Alaska's last hope. The inevitable sequel to his earlier smash, "Under Siege 2: Dark Territory" (1995), followed, with the inscrutable but increasingly accepted star receiving the occasional kudo for some lively action scenes. Indeed, although many critics found Seagal to be unchanged for his "guest star" supporting turn in the Kurt Russell actioner "Executive Decision" (1996), some found his cool dispatch, taken in measured doses, to constitute some of the best moments of his career to date.

Seagal took a break from the big-screen scene to concentrate on his love for music. After signing a seven year contract with OutWest Entertainment, Seagal returned back to his first love. He took on and mastered the role of Orin Boyd, a Detriot police detective in "Exit Wounds" (2001). The surprise success of "Exit Wounds" served as a breakout platform for newcomer rapper/actor DMX as well as a reclaiming-of-status for Seagal. In 2002, Seagal teamed up with Morris Chestnut and rapper Ja Rule for the action crime feature "Half Past Dead," portraying an undercover agent in a new high tech Alcatraz prison. In the months prior to the film's release, Seagal also made headlines when he was sued for $60 million by his longtime producing partner Julius Nasso, for allegedly backing out of a deal to star in four films, a development which took an unusual turn in June 2002 when Nasso was arrested and charged with extorting money from the action star. Federal investigators alleged that Nasso was acting in league with New York's notorious Gambino crime family, reportedly headed by Nasso's brother Anthony "Sonny" Ciccone, to extort $150,000 from Seagal for every film he made with the producer. The on-screen action hero said he was threatened with violence if he didn't cooperate. Later, allegations surfaced that Segall had hired private detective-to-the-stars Anthony Pellicano to stage a threatening incident against a Los Angeles Times reporter to make it look as if Nasso was behind it.

More legal trouble dogged the action star in 2005 when Nu Image and Kill Master Productions sued Seagal for $14 million for purportedly causing production delays on two movies, "Today You Die" and "Mercenary."

He traveled to Japan at the age of 17 where he taught English, studied Zen and perfected his martial arts, eventually earning black belts in aikido, karate, judo, and kendo.

Seagal spent 15 years in Asia, studying Eastern philosophy and occasionally choreographing martial arts fight scenes in movies. When he returned to the U.S., he opened a martial arts academy and became a bodyguard for such celebrities as Kelly LeBrock and Hollywood agent Michael Ovitz. The former eventually became Seagal's wife and the latter helped him make films for Warner Bros.

His first film, 1988's Above the Law was well received among action buffs, leading to 1989's Hard to Kill and 1992's Under Siege, his most popular film to date. In 1994, his directorial debut, On Deadly Ground, had disappointing results. He followed with two more action vehicles, 1996's Executive Decision and 1998's The Patriot.

Seagal's mysterious past has recently come under media scrutiny. Though he remains guarded, he has occasionally hinted about involvement with the CIA. Further speculation has surrounded the work he did on behalf of Tibetan freedom fighters, and it was not until 1997 that he mentioned the large amounts of money he claimed to have donated to various religious organizations. Seagal has presented himself as a serious student of Buddhism who spends many hours meditating, studying, and practicing to become a healer.

Seagal was married Miyako Fujitani from 1975 to 1987. They have two children, actor/model Kentaro (Justice) and Ayako. He and Dior model Kelly LeBrock have two daughters, Annaliza and Arissa, and a son, Dominic. They divorced in 1995. He also has a daughter, Savannah, by Arissa Wolf, his children's former nanny.
